Wandering to Drayton Valley

I have shocking news: I am employed.

Yes, it’s true. I have been asked to be the multimedia journalist for the Drayton Valley Western Review, a community newspaper in Drayton Valley, Alta. Unemployed graduate no more.

How I've been spending my unemployed time in Kelowna. I'm going to miss these blissful shenanigans!

How I’ve been spending my unemployed time in Kelowna. I’m going to miss these blissful shenanigans!

‘Tis a bitter sweet move as I make my way from Kelowna B.C. (where I have been staying at my parents), across the beautiful Rocky Mountains, to my new home in Drayton.

I have great expectations for the small Western Alberta town and rest assured I will keep publishing stories of my wanderings. I expect to have many adventures both there and beyond (hello three day weekends!). This wander woman rarely stays still.

Until then!

The Unseen work from Ms. Church of Canmore Manor

It has been quite some time since my last post in this here blog but I have decided to dust off the cobwebs and get’er up and running again for the good people of Banff and Canmore!

Some necessary background: I just moved to Canmore Alta. to start an internship with the QMI newspapers Banff Crag and Canyon and Canmore Leader. Yup, that’s right, made it to my first intern position. Maria the intern.

And so, from my new mountain home I am pumping out community news on a weekly basis and while many of the stories are shared in the paper, some of the gems are missed. Hence, the blog.

From here on out, I am dedicating these pages to my Canmore and Banff stories that will never be seen in print but still deserve to be read/viewed. I hope you enjoy and spread the word about the intern’s special stash of news!

Cheers

Singapore fling

It has been a busy two weeks! I just got back from an amazing nine days in Singapore blogging for Study and Go Abroad. My goal was to find out why Canadian students are one of the lowest ranked for international travel. I profiled three young women, one from India, one a Singaporean, and another from Switzerland to learn more about why they chose to travel abroad.

My favourite quote:

“You can’t really learn about culture in a school, you have to immerse yourself in it.” – Su-Lyn from Singapore

You can read my posts here at the blog site for gostudy.ca.

I am now back in Ottawa though still recovering thanks to the winter storm that greeted me!

And yet, it is always nice to come home. Stay tuned for more stories for Centretown News coming soon!

Gone till September

This is a long-time coming update that I am not in Ottawa for the summer of 2011 but I will be back in the fall. Tune in this September for more stories from me, a j-student/shutterbug, searching for stories in the neighbourhoods of Ottawa.

Have a lovely summer!
